What this is
Poker without money
Poker can be played without betting anything, and that is how it should be learned. Chips are not the game: they are how a decision gets measured. Take their value away and the game still works, because what poker teaches is not how to risk money. It is how to decide without seeing everything.
What follows is what a worthless chip actually is, why it is the better way to learn, and why this is precisely the thing a casino cannot offer you.
What a chip with no value is
A chip is a counter. It says how much you have put in, how much you have left and how much is in the middle. That is everything it does at the table, and it does it just as well whether it is worth a pound or nothing at all.
-
It cannot be bought
There is no way to get more chips by paying for them. You start with the same stack as everyone else and from there only the game moves them.
-
It converts into nothing
At the end of the night they turn into nothing at all. The biggest stack is not worth more than the smallest: it is worth having played better.
-
It never leaves the table
Chips stay where they are. They are not transferred, not banked, and not worth anything outside the game they were used in.
-
And losing them still stings
This is the part that surprises people. Losing chips is still losing the hand, and running out is still being out. The decision weighs the same. What does not weigh is the bill.
Why you learn better without betting
This is not a watered down version of learning for money. It is better, for four specific reasons.
- You can be wrong twenty times in a row
- Learning is getting it wrong a lot in a short time. With money on the table, twenty mistakes in a row is expensive and frightening, so you stop experimenting exactly when the experimenting was working.
- You can pay to the end and see what they had
- The most useful information in a hand sits in the other player's cards, and it only comes out if someone pays to the end. Playing for money you almost never see it. Playing for nothing you can buy that answer as often as you like.
- What you already put in stops pulling at you
- The most expensive beginner mistake is staying in a bad hand because of the chips already in the middle. When chips are worth nothing, that rope cuts itself and you learn to look only at the decision in front of you.
- Fear stops making the decisions
- With real money in play you end up competing against your own nerves instead of against the other player. Take the money out and you see what was actually happening in the hand much sooner.
Why a casino cannot give you this
It is not about good or bad intentions. The two things simply do not fit in the same room.
-
A card room lives on chips that get bought. The moment a chip can be bought it stops being an instrument of measurement and becomes something else. Everything downstream changes with it.
-
The free tables card rooms run exist so you get used to the table before playing for money. They are designed for you to move on, not to stay. A place built for learning has to be designed for the opposite.
-
Teaching well means telling you when to fold, when not to call and when to stand up. None of those three is good for a house that earns per hand dealt. We do not earn per hand dealt, so we can say them.
Where you play for nothing
What people ask
Is playing poker without money legal?
Gambling law turns on risking money or something of economic value on an uncertain outcome. A home game with chips that cannot be bought or cashed out has none of that, so it is not gambling. This site is not a bookmaker or a casino, offers no real money play, and links to none.
Is it any fun if nothing is at stake?
It is, and it is the same fun as always: working out what the other player has and being right. What disappears when the money goes is not the tension, it is the punishment. You still want to win the hand, and it still stings when someone bluffs you and shows it.
Does this prepare me to play for money?
It prepares you to understand every hand you play, which is a different thing. Nobody can promise you will make money at poker, and anyone who promises it is selling you something. If you ever do play for money, play with what you do not need and stop the day it stops being fun.
How many chips does everyone start with?
The same number, and plenty of them: a hundred times the big blind is a good stack. With blinds of one and two, that is two hundred chips each. One lost hand will not put anyone out, and the whole night stays playable, which is where the learning happens.
No money, and still playing properly
Reading how it works takes half an hour. Knowing what to do when it is your turn and you have no idea whether you are ahead is something else, and that part is not read.
A course from zero, no money and no casino.
